Food bank locations across Alberta in need of donations
Calgary, AB - November 30, 2010 - These past few years have been tough on Albertans, and no place is it more evident than at your local food bank. This past year, individuals and families have continued to struggle to meet monthly expenses, resulting, in some cases, in ongoing food insecurity.
It was stated in the 2010 HungerCount report that nearly 60,000 Albertans relied on the assistance of an Alberta food bank in order to have enough to eat, most of those youth and seniors. Youth who are living on their own for one reason or another are often working at minimum wage and fall below the poverty level. Seniors struggle to keep up with basic living expenses on a fixed income and often fall short.
You are making a difference in your life by attending Reeves College, and the economy is recovering so there are reasons for optimism. Unfortunately, too many Albertans continue to struggle to provide enough food for themselves and their families. Too many people do not have a nourishing meal in front of them at the end of the day. You can help. This December, each campus at Reeves College will hold a food bank drive. The campus that collects the most food will be featured in the first Reeves College newsletter in January 2011 - and your contributions of a non-perishable food item will help those most in need this holiday season.
Right now, food banks across the province are seriously stretched and they need everyone's support for both food and funds. Next time you are at the grocery store, toss in a few extra items -- a jar of peanut butter, a bag of pasta, some rice and canned fruit. Cash donations help too and most grocery stores make it easy with vouchers at the checkout. And last but not least, if you have time, volunteer. Just helping out sends a message to that you care and want to help. Let's help our fellow Albertans.
