Oil and petroleum production has been a booming business over the past few years, and current projections suggest the trend will continue well into the future. Yet with oilsands production in Alberta expected to outpace the province's capacity to refine it, analysts believe that the region's upgrading and refining sector could see significant growth in the coming years.

The Globe and Mail recently spoke with Premier Alison Redford, who was confident that the industry will face higher demand in the near future. She is calling on local entrepreneurs and members of the petroleum market to rise to the occasion and keep the processing of locally produced fuel within the province.

"We believe there is an opportunity to do more upgrading [and refining] in Alberta," said Redford. "We believe - I believe - that Albertans want that to be done in a way that ensures they are economically viable."
