Social and community service workers (NOC 42201), the occupational group that ALIS uses for child and youth care workers, earned an average of $25.52 an hour, or $42,534 a year, in Alberta in the 2023 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey. These wage figures cover that broader group, not only child and youth care workers. Calgary reported the higher average hourly wage, and Edmonton reported a higher average annual salary and longer average weekly hours than Calgary.

Here's what the child and youth worker salary data shows for both cities and the rest of Alberta, and how to read it if you're weighing training against the pay.

Child and Youth Worker Salary in Calgary vs Edmonton

ALIS links NOC 42201 to its Child and Youth Care Worker profile, and Job Bank places both child and youth worker and youth worker in the same group:

ALIS Measure (2023) Alberta Calgary Edmonton
Starting wage $22.61 $24.30 $21.84
Average wage $25.52 $27.22 $25.05
Top wage $28.55 $29.36 $28.58
Average salary $42,534 $41,289 $44,388
Average hours a week 31.8 29.5 33.3
Average months on payroll 11.8 11.5 12

ALIS defines the starting wage as average pay offered for entry-level positions, the average wage as average pay across all employees in the occupation, and the top wage as average pay offered to top-paid employees. All three are survey averages, not guaranteed pay for graduates of any program. Actual pay may be lower or higher, depending on the employer, setting, hours, and your experience.

Hourly Wage vs Annual Salary in Calgary and Edmonton

Here's how the two cities compare on each ALIS measure:

  • Average wage: Calgary's $27.22 was $2.17 higher than Edmonton's $25.05.
  • Average salary: Edmonton's $44,388 was $3,099 higher than Calgary's $41,289.
  • Weekly hours: Edmonton averaged 33.3 hours a week, compared with 29.5 in Calgary.
  • Months on payroll: Edmonton averaged 12 months, compared with 11.5 in Calgary.
  • Hourly gap by pay level: Calgary's lead was largest at the starting wage ($2.46) and smallest at the top wage ($0.78).

In practice, ALIS reports the average wage and the average salary as separate figures, so read them side by side. For a single job offer, multiply the hourly rate by the guaranteed weekly hours: at $25.52 an hour, each extra hour a week adds about $1,327 over a full year.

Shifts and Hours in Child and Youth Care Work

ALIS notes that child and youth care workers may work day, evening, and some night shifts, seven days a week. In Alberta, Job Bank reports that 81% of workers in this occupation work full time and 63% work all year.

ALIS's hourly figures include both full-time and part-time employees. Before you accept a role, ask:

  • Is the position permanent full time, part time, or casual?
  • How many hours a week are guaranteed?
  • Which shifts are included: days, evenings, overnights, or weekends?
  • Are you eligible for benefits at your scheduled hours?

How Calgary and Edmonton Compare to Other Alberta Regions

Neither Calgary nor Edmonton has the highest figures in the province. ALIS reports these figures for all eight economic regions:

Region Starting Wage Average Wage Top Wage Average Salary Average Hours a Week
Alberta $22.61 $25.52 $28.55 $42,534 31.8
Athabasca-Grande Prairie $21.46 $23.38 $26.51 $42,024 34.1
Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House $22.17 $23.97 $26.50 $36,312 27.9
Calgary $24.30 $27.22 $29.36 $41,289 29.5
Camrose-Drumheller $20.91 $23.52 $26.26 $40,997 32.8
Edmonton $21.84 $25.05 $28.58 $44,388 33.3
Lethbridge-Medicine Hat $22.40 $25.20 $28.61 $40,302 29.6
Red Deer $22.20 $25.35 $28.07 $42,103 31.1
Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake $26.82 $29.76 $34.41 $47,593 36.3

Here's what stands out:

  • Hourly rank vs yearly rank: Calgary had the second-highest average wage of the eight regions but ranked fifth for average salary. Edmonton ranked fifth for average wage and second for average salary.
  • Highest averages: Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake led on hourly wage ($29.76), salary ($47,593), and weekly hours (36.3), but workers there averaged 9.4 months on payroll, the fewest of any region.
  • Lowest salary: Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House had the shortest average week (27.9 hours) and the lowest average salary ($36,312).

The regions with longer average weeks generally reported higher average salaries, as Edmonton did compared with Calgary. These are survey averages for each region's employers, not guaranteed pay, and they don't show what anyone would earn by relocating.

What the Numbers Mean for Your Plan

Your starting point decides which figures matter most:

Your Situation How to Use the ALIS Data
Comparing offers in Calgary Multiply the hourly rate by the guaranteed weekly hours to estimate yearly pay for that offer. Calgary's average week was 29.5 hours.
Comparing offers in Edmonton Check whether the hours are permanent. The 33.3-hour average includes both full-time and part-time staff.
Living outside Calgary or Edmonton Check your region's row above. Average salaries ranged from $36,312 in Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House to $47,593 in Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake.
New to the field Treat starting wages ($24.30 in Calgary, $21.84 in Edmonton) as reference points. Actual offers may be lower or higher.

What the Data Doesn't Show

Read these figures with five limits in mind:

  • Pay beyond wages: ALIS figures exclude overtime, tips, benefits, profit shares, and bonuses. Nationally, Job Bank reports that 83.6% of workers in this occupation receive at least one non-wage benefit, so total compensation can be higher.
  • Timing: The figures are from 2023. The Government of Alberta is now conducting the 2026 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, so newer numbers are on the way.
  • Who is counted: NOC 42201 covers the whole social and community service worker group, not only child and youth care workers. It describes people working in the occupation, not graduates of any program.
  • Living costs: ALIS wages aren't adjusted for differences in living costs between Calgary and Edmonton.
  • Sample size: ALIS rates every regional figure Good Reliability, which means smaller samples or a wider margin of error than the provincial figures, rated High. Treat small gaps between regions as rough.
