Addictions & Community Services Worker grad helps others get sober

Thursday, November 29, 2018

Tyler Lorenz's journey to sobriety after many years of addiction inspired him to help others who are struggling with drug use.

Lorenz, a graduate of Reeves College's Addictions & Community Services Worker program, is behind the Residents in Recovery program in Lloydminster.

"Having lived a life in active addiction, I fully appreciate the struggle and the barriers that are present in our system that prohibits many from getting the help that they need," says Lorenz, who serves as program director.

"My passion is to help others in the same situation see that there is hope and that recovery is possible."

The Residents in Recovery program supports people with mental health and addictions issues as they prepare for or return from residential treatment.

It provides a range of services, including life skills education, addictions programming, and assistance making doctor or counsellor appointments.

Lorenz says he was driven to take the Addictions & Community Services Worker diploma program because of his desire to help others.

"I didn’t realize at the time that I was going to be this passionate about it but as it turned out I truly believe that this was my calling," he says.

"I had to go through everything that I did so that I could understand addiction on the personal level that I do."

Now that Residents in Recovery is up and running, Tyler is doing his part to support new students in the program. He's taken on a practicum student from Reeves College and headed back to the classroom as a guest speaker.

"We really do need more passionate people in this field and I am willing to support anyone wishing to pursue this career in any way that I can."
