Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Some students may have known at a very young age that they've always wanted to work in the legal industry. Others may begin to approach the idea at an older age and start to consider which type of career they should follow within the industry. One of the best ways to choose the right professional path is to examine the day-to-day duties of a profession and imagine following that lifestyle. For those considering a future as a paralegal, here are some typical duties to expect.

Generally, the role of a paralegal is to help move each assigned case along to its conclusion. Aside from this overall structure, the duties of paralegals will change according to their unique specialty.

As a paralegal in litigation law, professionals collaborate with attorneys throughout each stage of the process: discovery, pretrial, trial, posttrial and settlement. Probate law is different because the laws can often change and vary from province to province, but essentially will handle property transfers, wills, asset verification and other duties that revolve around people's estates.

Another field to pursue is entertainment law. As a paralegal in the entertainment industry, professionals will perform duties regarding various contracts, including talent agreements, options agreements, distribution contracts and contract negotiations. This role is only one tier under the corporate law umbrella, which also includes specialties such as banking, copyrights and securities.

The number of paths a paralegal can take are endless, and when adults enroll in programs at Reeves College, they can gain a better understanding of the specialty that is right for them. To begin enrollment, fill out the form on the right.
