Tips for Multi-Tasking and Time Management

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Lethbridge, AB - October 19, 2010 - In today's workplace, soft skills like multi-tasking, time management and processing information are important. These skills are also hard to learn and even harder to showcase on a resume or cover letter. Often, business college programs have courses that help students develop time management and other soft skills.

Here are some tips that will help you manage your workload and embrace multi-tasking at the same time.

Time Management Tips

Process email information once - When you receive an email, read it and reply immediately. If the message needs more thought, move it to your to-do list and organize your email into file folders for easier reference and follow-up. Another good tip is to check your emails on a schedule, at a time when you can respond quickly and reduce your work interruptions.

Organize a to-do list - A list shows you at a glance what needs to be done, and helps prioritize your tasks. Some people break projects up into manageable chunks and others sort their to-do list by importance - completing the most important task of the day first.

Locate information easier - Create folders for your email, website addresses, projects, documents and everything else you are working on so that you save time and energy looking for things down the road.  In addition, set up shortcuts to reduce the number of keystrokes and save you some time.

Multi-Tasking Tricks

Slow down - There are times multi-tasking is overwhelming and productivity is reduced. By focusing on one task at a time you can increase your productivity, especially on important projects that require your full attention. Also, working on larger projects when you are most productive makes the task easier.

Practice multi-tasking and time management skills and discover what works best for you. As many graduates of the Reeves College's Office Administration and Business Administration Management programs can attest to, time management skills are important traits employers are looking for and easily gained through practice.
